Artist Statment

"The Edges of Canvas" is a group of sculptural paintings that use art to critique both art and life. I began by observing how people not only look at a painting but also pay attention to its edges. By breaking the silence of painting, each work expresses gestures or discussions that criticize art. This work is also an open gate for everyone to contribute to art. As the work itself can be stretched, when people own it, they have the power to personalize and interact with it by regrouping and resizing it.

Craft, time, childhood, and labor are integral parts of this work. The purity of making them traces back to their primary materiality. Color and shape describe their meanings. Throughout the process of dividing, folding, and laying the canvas, the edges of the canvas are no longer invisible. Every part of the work is displayed in front of the audience, and each mark is easy to notice. Layer by layer, we are all laborers of something, trying to fit into modern economic sociology. Once again, who are we? Whom do we want to be? I want to discover the pure and natural forms of making art and of being human. I strive to explore the purity and hybrid of art and life, but it is always more complicated than I imagine.
